Professor of Religion Jay Sakashita Tackles "Clobber Passages"
It is said that scripture should be a rock on which one stands, not a stone thrown to do damage. Yet there are several verses in the Bible that some wield like weapons to hurt others, causing pain especially to those in the LGBTQ+ Community. These are referred to as "clobber passages: because they are used like clubs to beat people down with.
This excerpt is drawn from an article published in the Midweek by Jay Sakashita, Ph.D., Professor of Religion at Leeward Community College. Dr. Sakashita has so far published two articles examining the way "clobber passages" from the Bible can be interpreted in ways that may be exclusionary and harmful. His explanations offer succinct and thoughtful perspectives to help readers move towards more inclusionary and accepting interpretations when it comes to Christianity's views on the LGBTQIA+ community.
You can view two of his articles below. We will post more as they become available. Mahalo nui, Dr. Sakashita, for working to bring this information to the community!
